I’m on the fence about this one. It’s nice - and feels like a sport compact should (albeit with a not-so-great 6-speed auto) but the color isn’t me. Add to that the satin gray is a $1000 option, and I like the color even less.
Also, it’s a sporty, tarted up Hyundai Accent for twice the price. Seriously - this one has a sticker price around $30k. The guys in the shop did a custom leather interior on this one. I honestly kind of dig the Porsche-style Turbo script. From this:
to this:
I even kind of like the red — maybe because it’s not really bright and it sort of compliments the satin gray...

I like it. It is interesting which is kind of lacking among new cars today.

I don't feel about the Veloster.

From all I have heard the Veloster looks a lot cooler than it drives.
I test drove one a while back, it was a lot nicer to drive than my Cavalier but that's not saying that much especially as my Cav had 4 broken shock abosrbers at that time.

I like the look of it but would never buy one. The price range they're in gets you some pretty fun to drive hot hatches.

Pretty much. Looks writing cheques the driving dynamics can't cash.

I don't really care for it.

I thought for sure I was going to buy one of these when they came out...they looked cool and on paper they should have been really quick. Then I drove it...was really disappointed. Despite the extra power and lower weight it didn't feel that much quicker than my Mazda3 2.5. It was really tight on the inside, the ride was super stiff, but also didn't have the best handling to justify the harshness. My 04 Mini Cooper was stiff but I got double exit ramp speeds all day in complete confidence. And when they did first come out dealers were not budging on prices and some were market up. If you really like it find a lightly used example many can be had well equipped for low 20's, but really there is no reason to get this over the Fiesta ST. And that paint...it looks cool but a total pain in the ass to keep clean.

I would rather have a FoST for that money.

The red interior looks great. Although, in the long run I think a FoST would be more fun, practical DD.

I'd never buy it or recommend it, but I'd certainly enjoy it and not think any less of someone else for loving it. It's not a bad car just not one that lives up to its ideals.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 09:08 |

At that price, you're in well-equipped FoST territory, or GTI, or Civic Si with $5000+ for mods, or Cooper S, or FiST with $7000 for mods, etc...

I was going to share my opinion...but what he said.
Quirky little car, disappointing to drive.

I took a short test drive of one and it was an immediate nope. There's something really awkward about the rear suspension in corners over bumps. Took it on a highway on-ramp loop with some expansion joints and it was totally unsettled. Each joint would cause the rear to shift its track significantly and it would induce this weird butt-shimmy oscillation.
The interior is fine, the engine was decent, the front suspension was ok, but the rear was a total deal-breaker.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 09:12 |

They start pretty low I think, but either way you can get a lot more car for the money.

Yep, I find it hard to justify the hyundai over a more practical and probably better to drive Focus ST.

The veloster makes a lot of promises it cant keep. The styling hits you like that pretty girl from the inter net dating sites. You spend a few days talking to her, getting to know her and even start to really fall for the girl. Then you meet up and realuze she knows how to look good in photos but when you see her there in her sweat pants at the coffe shop the audden realization that the real wold reality is shes jothing short of average. Then she starts talking about reality tv and shating inane stories about her cats dispite the fact that her profile made her out to be an adventure seeking fun girl. Nope shes boring and average. Fuck her, pay the 4.50 foor the coffe and go home to jerk off to porn. Shes not even worth quickie..

"it's a sporty, tarted up Hyundai Accent for twice the price"
You answered your own question.

To be fair, while Veloster turbo only has 201 HP, it has 195ft-lb torque - that's pretty impressive and the car only weights 2900lbs. I do believe for turbo 6MT also comes standard and 6AT is the option (no DCT). Personally not a big fan of the mcpherson + torsion suspension setup though.
On the other hand like many others have said, for that kind of money FoST/FiST is the better hatchback (damn you Mazda for not releasing new MS3).

I've driven it with both a stick and the autotragic. I've tried my best to like it (partly since I work at a Hyundai dealership) but it's really nothing special.
It's less boring than the rest of the lineup (disregarding the Genesis Coupe of course), but still pretty boring and really not much more than a lukewarm hatch. Great if you're just looking for something slightly exciting (while still being quite practical as a daily), bleh if you want something actually exciting.
I'm also got a semi-rigid rear axle which is just stupid when they're trying to sell it of as a sports car (of sorts).

Torsion beam rear suspension

If you could get the 2.0 turbo or 3.8 v6 from the Genesis then the veloster would be a monster. It's one of those cars that looks a lot faster than it really is.

That red leather looks droopy.

It's aftermarket. It'll shrink up in the next few hours because it's sitting in the sun. CST is far better than Katzkin when it comes to aftermarket and I don't just say that because I work for them.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 10:13 |

I'm sorry with the Focus ST in this price range there is ZERO justification for veloster.

Own one. Love it. It's not an M3, but its pretty fun to drive around town. Accessories for days. If you want a track car, get something else. For a daily driver, its pretty great.

Do you make anything for the last gen Celica's? My wifes interior in her 03' is really sad and she refuses to sell that car. Thinking about getting it redone for xmas this year.

We have kits for all three seat configurations that were in the celica GT/GTS so yeah. at my branch, we charge about $900+tax for a basic single color but you can add a bunch of options if you like. If you look through my posts, you'll see some of the work done from our shop.

She doesn't want leather... But her car is yellow, I was thinking a nice black cloth with yellow stitching. Idk if that's even possible.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 11:24 |

It's certainly possible, but it'll be expensive. You'll probably have to pay for someone to custom-make the upholstery and will likely pay as much or more for that cloth.

I like the Porsche style seats. I like the Veloster on the average. I don't like the $30K pricetag. To UK and Euro ears, that sounds average, but in the US that's steeeeeep. At that point I'd start looking at the Fusion.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:03 |

I think they are catastrophically ugly and they have stiff competition at the price.
I'd get one of the competitors

This is random, but I was driving to work last week, and saw one on the highway with Truck Nutz. Made me giggle.

True Story:
For the first year of our marriage, my wife and I shared her New Beetle Convertible. It was almost identical to this:
my mom bought me Truck Nutz for it.
My wife wouldn't let me get the wheels powdercoated gulf orange... Eventually the timing belt snapped and we sold it cheap.

My wife traded her 13 Juke Nismo for one a few months back, the good news is you can buy them a lot cheaper than MSRP, the bad news is they still aren't as cool as a Focus ST (though for her driving the auto tranny is better) she also comes from a "Ford family" and refuses to even consider another Ford (after having 4 Tauruses a Contour :ech: and a Sable). All in all though the driving experience is good, handles really well given the suspension architecture and I swear they pipe the most beautiful noises through that center exhaust pipe (it really does sound great!). If you get one loaded up you can also get Hyundai BlueLink which is cool as fuck, she can not only start the car from her iPhone but she can track down its every move through the built in GPS (no losing it in parking lots) and any time the alarm goes off she gets a text, also there is a valet mode that notifies you if the car has gone over a set speed. Plus it has one of the most user friendly and easy to use Nav systems I have ever dealt with (shows you virtual picture of what lane to be in). All in all it's a great little car, the backseat is however just like the play area of a chuck e cheese, adult free and tight fitting.

i drove this after i drove a focus ST and Fiesta ST. Go with the fords man. Save yourself some money and get the more fun/better/faster/awesomer car.

Probably easier to get new stock seat covers.

I like that it exists and have no problem with it, it's just not my sort of car.

I rented one from Enterprise to go on a 4 hour road trip. It was a base model 4 cylinder. The dual clutch was nice and the shift was crazy smooth. Seats were comfortable to my small frame. But the biggest things for me - cheap feeling steering column. I felt like at any time I could've broke something off because of the cheap plastics - and the 3 doors. Who the hell makes a car with 3 doors. It sucks to have something to put in the back and have to walk all the way around the car to put it in.
....however....all of this coming from a truck guy....

Was excited to see this car when it came out. Still kind of like it, but the Fiesta ST ate its lunch. And a lot of other car's lunches.
